What Happened to Beyoncé’s Wax Figure at Madame Tussauds?

As is so often the case, it all started with a well-intended Tweet. On Tuesday, a Beyoncé fan who had recently visited Madame Tussauds in New York shared a picture of Queen Bey’s wax figure on social media, calling it “Fierce!” But a closer look (actually a far away one, too) revealed that the wax statue of the pop singer looked nothing like her—and, more disturbingly, was several shades lighter than the black superstar.

The backlash on Twitter came fast as the image started making its rounds. Several users wondered why Bey’s figure looked like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, while a woman who said she worked at Madame Tussauds in the past accused the museum of having a more accurate representation of the singer, writing: “I know they have a better (an actual) Beyoncé. Wattice dis?”

If you thought it couldn’t get worse than that, it did, after others online started sharing alternate versions of wax Beyoncé. The results were so varied, Allure’s Editor in Chief Michelle Lee wondered if these wax sculptors had ever even seen Beyoncé.

Perhaps wax figure-makers should turn to Beyoncé‘s music for pointers in the future, particularly “Formation,” in which she sings of how much she loves her black skin and “Jackson Five nostrils,” all of which are bafflingly missing from this interpretation.

Update: The Beyoncé wax figure has reportedly been removed from Madame Tussauds in New York. A staff member at the museum told the New York Times it was “off the floor until further notice.”
