Zoe Kravitz is regarded by many as the ultimate cool girl, for good reason. The actor and singer’s unfiltered, easygoing demeanor makes a rapid-fire beauty chat sincerely stimulating.

How does the Big Little Lies star relieve stress? Wine, weed, and sleep, she says. A beauty mistake she regrets? Wearing too much of it. The beauty trend she wishes would go away? Over contouring. The beauty trend that shocks her? Botox for sweat. (“That is the dumbest, scariest thing I’ve ever heard,” she says. “Don’t do that—sweating is key.”)

At a time when the celebrity beauty space can feel oversaturated, it’s that earnest attitude that makes her makeup launch with YSL Beauté something special; rather than a surface-level collaboration, Kravitz made it familiar. She chose to update her favorite YSL lipsticks, Rouge Pur Couture, and named them after important people in her life. “We started with the colors first, so we had to think of six names,” she tells Vogue. “I just wanted them to be personal; it means something to me when I hear those words.”

Arlene’s Nude, a mauve neutral—and the first shade available for purchase—is named after her grandmother. Lale’s Red, named after her mom, is a dark oxblood red with a shimmer satin finish. The six lipsticks are all housed in black shimmer rectangular cases and retail for $38 each, with a new lipstick dropping on the YSL Beauté site every day until August 25.

“We started really classic and simple, which to me is really the foundation of my style,” Kravitz explains of choosing the colors. “It's great to have really simple colors that you can build on top of, wear crazy outfits with, do a crazy eye with, which is why we kind of stayed with the nudes and the reds for this collection and go crazier as we go on. I hope they're a good kind of accent to help people feel more confident.”

She admits to bouncing some ideas off her makeup artist friends, but this collection is really a cumulation of everything she’s learned from wearing a lot of makeup at work. “I've kind of come to to learn the things that I like,” she says. “I don't like when things are too chalky. I like when things are matte but still have a little bit of moisture in them. I tried to make things that I would wear personally.” Beauty for her is about celebrating uniqueness, not covering it up. “I think we’re at an interesting time right now with makeup,” she says. “A lot of people are completely re-sculpting their faces and it makes everyone look the same, which to me is a shame. Everyone is unique and different in their own way—I think that's a beautiful thing, and makeup should be used to enhance that.”

As for what’s next? "I feel like Jerry, my godfather, will be reading this later and wonder [why he didn’t get a lipstick],” she jokes, “so I’ll have to make more.”
