Wizkid Is Building a Wardrobe Fit for a Global Superstar
Hailing from the bustling and vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, Wizkid has steadfastly popularized Afrobeats across the world. At the same time, the musician has carved out an intriguing position for himself within the world of luxury fashion—blending together designs by African and European designers with remarkable deft and ease. He worked frequently with the late Virgil Abloh and, after the designer’s passing last year, the musician staged a touching on-stage tribute at the Made in Lagos concert.
Last week, Wizkid played his first-ever concert at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden (which, naturally, was sold-out). Styled by the London-based creative director Karen Binns, his looks were suitably Lagos-flavored and braggadocious. Wizkid expertly paired together different pieces by different designers: a fur coat by Saint Laurent, a pair of leather Dolce & Gabbana gloves, and a black-on-black sequined suit crafted by Nigerian designer Tokyo James. There were delightful statement accessories, too, including stacked necklaces and dark sunglasses.
The look was part of an impressively busy week for the superstar. Two days later, after entertaining thousands at MSG, Wizkid appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, wearing a more understated and minimalist black look for his stripped-down performance of “Money & Love.” Two days later, he made history at the American Music Awards by becoming the first-ever recipient of the newly created “Best Afrobeats” category. Also: The highly anticipated release of his album, More Love, Less Ego. A busy week for a worldwide name.
As Wizkid—and afrobeats in tandem—become increasingly popular globally, his look is becoming grander as well. As Bass puts it, “Wizkid’s style is a representation of his exposure to the world: Eclectic, sexy, and free.”
