To say that the world of wellness can be overwhelming is an understatement. Where exactly to begin on the path towards a healthier life when there are a plethora of practices to implement (Crystals! Cannabis! Cryotherapy!)? Ask any modern-day self-care guru and they’ll tell you that the minute you open your eyes is a very good place to start. “I’m all about establishing a strong morning routine because it’s the best way to positively impact the day ahead,” says New York City–based wellness expert Daphne Javitch. Not to mention, it’s a surefire way to “gently get back on track after an indulgent evening or weekend.”
With that in mind, we asked five wellness pros to sound off on their own morning routines, and the one—achievable!—tweak we should make to ours this weekend as daylight saving time springs the clocks forward. From there, in the words of Toronto’s plant-based chef Tonya Papanikolov: “Find consistency and just watch your life blossom.”

“Mushrooms want to support and upgrade us! Boost your brain, immune system, and cells by introducing a teaspoon a day of lion’s mane into your morning smoothie or coffee—or try out reishi, the treasured mushroom of immortality. Use these consistently and feel their power take you higher.”

“When I first wake up, I perform a morning meditation. Then, I take some time to chant lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu, which sends my love to all beings everywhere, prepares me to receive the day, and gets my vibration on a higher level. In Ayurveda, this is a type of ‘cleaning’ or purification of the spirit.”

“I think taking care of the space you live and breath in can also serve your spirit and give more meaning to your day—in Africa, for instance, there’s the ritual of sweeping with the sunrise. I go ahead and open the windows to let fresh air in. Then, I will light palo santo or some sort of uplifting incense to burn the night away. I water my plants and then start to bring my [focus] back to myself.”

“Liquids until lunch! I recommend consuming water, green juices, tea or coffee, and broths in the morning hours. The benefits of intermittent fasting include cellular repair, brain health, weight loss, longevity, and hydration. If the idea of liquid nourishment until lunch triggers anxiety, start by delaying breakfast for 1 to 2 hours.”

“I try not to look at my phone for the first 45 minutes that I’m awake. In that time, I try to focus on my intention for the day. For example, ‘all from love and balance’ was mine for today. It helps me to start my morning from a clear and focused place, even if I don’t have time to meditate.”
