Considering the comeback-kid nature of this year's Met Gala, it comes as no surprise that the interpretation of the evening's theme—In America: A Lexicon of Fashion—would lean exuberantly exaggerated. But amid the event's over-the-top moments, a few more subtle nods shone through, each exuding the glamour associated with a particularly enduring all-American era: Old Hollywood.
“I just feel like the hot girl culture needs to give Hollywood glamour,” said Megan Thee Stallion of her high-shine finger waves, parted deeply to one side and falling a few inches past her shoulders. While Megan coupled her glossy lengths with an equally glossy pink lip and sky-skimming lashes, Kaia Gerber's more abbreviated coiffure found soft stylized curls framing a barely-there blend of power brows and a matte rose pout—the perfect pairing for her Oscar de la Renta gown.
For Yara Shahidi, though, the inspiration came with a name: Josephine Baker. Shahidi channeled the French-American icon with a crown of intricate braids that erupted into a lovely shoulder-length collective of brushed curls. A Baker-esque kiss curl, diamante headband, and mauve makeup served to ensure the reference was a clear one, all while keeping the look as timelessly striking as her beaded Dior gown.
Billie Eilish, meanwhile, channeled Marilyn Monroe with a voluminous blonde bob and corseted ballgown. Because, when it comes to our collective lexicon of fashion, what's more American than Hollywood?
