Today marks Lunar New Year 2018, otherwise known as the Year of the Dog. Many will be ringing it in with grand feasts and confetti-sprinkled street parties, and some will receive small red envelopes with money inside. The color is a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture, and the gesture is meant to be a wish for luck (and more money) in the year to come.
Truthfully, we could all use a little more cold, hard cash at the moment, especially given the fluctuating financial markets and a political administration that favors the wealthy elite. A red wallet might come in handy this year and in the next several to come. Who knows—carrying around a piece of Lunar New Year tradition in your pocket could bring some serendipitous change to your checking account.
