Narciso Rodriguez Is Taking a Break From the Runway, and More Changes for NYFW

New York Fashion Week is still 42 days away, but the calendar already looks a little different. The latest shake-up for Spring ’18 comes from one of New York’s subtlest, most consistent designers: Narciso Rodriguez. In lieu of his usual runway show on Tuesday evening, the designer is planning to shoot a lookbook and host private appointments with editors and buyers in his atelier. This isn’t a new concept, as more designers have been embracing presentations and experimental show formats, but for a designer as steadfast as Rodriguez, it’s a pretty significant move.

It could also add to the snowball effect of NYFW’s many other changes. Two weeks ago, New York mainstay Joseph Altuzarra announced he’s moving his show to Paris, joining Thom Browne as well as a few designers who already showed their Spring ’18 collections during couture week: Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, and Monique Lhuillier. We also learned that Ralph Lauren is venturing outside of New York City to host his Fall ’17 see-now-buy-now men’s and women’s show and dinner in his automotive garage in Bedford, New York (coincidentally at the same time Rodriguez’s show would have been). And don’t forget Tommy Hilfiger! He’s skipping NYFW again this season to stage another Tommy x Gigi extravaganza at the end of London Fashion Week on September 19.

Of course, if you’re looking for some good New York news, Raf Simons has moved his Calvin Klein men’s and women’s show to the opening night of NYFW; Kanye West is showing Yeezy here again; and Tom Ford has plans to show on the first day, too, most likely with plenty of celebrities in tow. Oh, and the NYFW calendar is one day shorter: Instead of closing the week on the second Thursday, which is typically a light day, Marc Jacobs will show the evening before, on Wednesday, September 13—meaning you have an extra day to get to London Fashion Week. Watch this space for more NYFW updates; we have a feeling there will be others soon to come.
