For Liv Tyler, beauty has always been a family affair. The daughter of model Bebe Buell and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, Tyler inherited their shared proclivity for attention to self-care, and it shows. “The more I do this stuff, the better I feel inside,” insists the 42-year-old actor. “And the more calm I feel, the better my skin looks on the outside.” On a sunny afternoon inside of her charming West Village brownstone in New York City, Tyler is traipsing around her dreamy, sun-drenched bathroom, taking us through her daily 25-step routine, equal parts beauty and self-care.

“My secret obsession—a passion of my whole life—is skin care,” explains Tyler. “I think I would’ve become a facialist if I didn’t start acting.” Throwing her hair up in a Cherished Objects scrunchie made of recycled fabrics, Tyler begins by gently removing her makeup, letting the creamy cleanser melt away her mascara in “’90s grunge” fashion. To purify her complexion, she spreads Astara’s Blue Flame Purification Mask all over her face, leaving the Smurf-hued treatment on for a few minutes. Flanked by photographs of her mother and grandmothers on either side, Tyler credits them both as enduring beauty inspirations. “I think I’ve always been sort of enchanted by watching them,” she explains. But credit is also due to her rock-star father, of course.

“My dad is so into skin care,” Tyler explains. “When I go visit him, I usually spend half of the time in the bathroom just going over products. His whole bathroom is filled!” After waxing poetic about getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and adding green juice to the mix in order to supplement finely tuned skin care, she reaches for Lord Jones’s Royal Oil for a dose of anxiety-reducing CBD. “It doesn’t make you feel stoned at all,” she promises. Spreading on a few drops of Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Acid, she uses Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Facialift tool to boost lymphatic drainage while allowing for the following face oil and moisturizer to penetrate deeper. “I use it when I’m laying in bed,” she says with a giggle as she sculpts her jawline. Then, letting the world in on her number-one de-puffing secret, she whips Talika’s Eye Therapy Patches out of the refrigerator and applies them to cooling effect.

Her luminous canvas prepped, Tyler moves on to the no-makeup-makeup portion of her regimen, which always starts off with her tried-and-true coverage technique: Blending concealer with a precision lipstick brush for an imperceptible result. “I think it’s really nice when you can get right up in someone’s face and still see who they are,” she explains of her less-is-more approach, swirling her cheeks with pink blush and adding a “sprinkle of light” with a creamy highlighter stick. “I know people have a very big obsession with really strong brows, but I like a really natural brow,” she says while delicately filling in her arches with Kevyn Aucoin’s Brow Pencil, then smudging metallic pink eyeshadow on the lids and brushing a coat of Clinique High-Impact Waterproof Mascara on the lashes. Adding a slick of Glossier’s Generation G lipstick in Crush, she reveals that she also wears the raspberry-pink shade while playing 18th-century aristocrat Lady Isabella Fitzwilliam on the Hulu drama Harlots.

“That’s my sort of natural, everyday makeup look,” Tyler laughs, signing off with a kiss goodbye. “Thank you so much for hanging out with me!” But the pleasure is all ours.
