Did Prince Harry just get the Queen’s approval to propose to Meghan Markle? That’s the question that many people are asking today after a source said that the conversation had already taken place. And while receiving your grandmother’s approval may not seem like a big deal for a 30-something-year-old adult, when it comes to the Queen of England, the rules are a little bit different. Since Prince Harry is currently fifth in line to the throne, he must receive permission from the sovereign in order to marry, according to the The Royal Marriages Act of 1772.

News of the Queen’s reported conversation with Prince Harry comes fresh off the heels of a couple other recent developments. This week, an official spokesperson for Westminster Abbey said that the couple could marry in England’s famous church. “The Abbey follows the General Synod Ruling of 2002. Since then it has been possible for divorced people to be married in the Church of England,” the spokesperson said. While Westminster Abbey has not always been used for royal marriages (Queen Victoria, after all, married elsewhere) it is where Prince William and Kate Middleton memorably said their vows.

Additionally, last week, the couple made their first official appearance together. And this weekend, Markle will attend Pippa Middleton’s wedding ceremony and reception as Prince Harry’s date.
