Last Week, Stars Found Fresh Options for Day and Night
Although the red carpet is still the space to parade the best in eveningwear, for the world’s most stylish, extraordinary fashion moments can happen anywhere and at any time. Last week casual strolls, bar crawls, and morning television appearances were graced by spectacular looks. In New York, Rihanna took over the Jane Hotel’s taproom for a now-viral segment with Late Night’s Seth Meyers, enjoying a cold beer in a green checked jumpsuit from Dior, heaps of gold jewelry, and her favorite Alaïa tote. One word: chill. For those in Paris for the menswear collections, off-duty dressing suddenly seemed more important than front-row star turns: for example, BLACKPINK’s Lisa captured in a spotted, youthful Celine frock by Hedi Slimane just because. Likewise, Natalia Vodianova took borrowing from the boys to new heights by becoming the first person to wear the silvery suiting from Kim Jones’s Daniel Arsham–inspired Dior Homme collection for Spring 2020.
At night, it was all about ease. Cranberry ruffles by Johanna Ortiz on Alexa Chung took the heaviness out of her diamond choker; Lily James was a precocious pixie in a pinafore number by Riccardo Tisci for Burberry; and Emily Ratajkowski headed to an evening screening of her new film Lying and Stealing in a draped jersey column by Narciso Rodriguez. The effect was effortless and stunning—could be day, could be night—and Ratajkowski looked the part of modern movie star.
