This morning, the world watched closely as Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at the historic Windsor Castle. While the bride’s contagious smile and custom Givenchy gown took center stage, it was her effortless updo that deserved a double take, as it broke with traditional royal wedding day beauty standards.

While many royals from Kate Middleton to Queen Elizabeth have typically worn their diamond tiara with a set of flowing waves for their own nuptials, Markle opted to trade out her shiny semi-curled blowout for a new bridal signature, courtesy of famed hairstylist Serge Normant. Worn loose and scraped back into a low bun, with piece-y strands freely framing her surprisingly natural-looking facade, given to her by celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin, the Duchess of Sussex paired Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, made in 1932 and on loan from the Queen, with a bit of California cool. For some, the rebellious hairstyle may come as a surprise, but others likely know that a laissez-faire bun has become something of a mainstay for the American-born beauty, having teased fans with many trial low chignons over the last few months. Still, one thing is for certain: The modern and versatile updo is surely a bridal beauty trend in the making.
