Anne Hathaway has gifted us with some good tidings on this rather harried news day: The Princess Diaries 3? It’s likely happening. And someone very important is on board: Dame Julie Andrews, of course, who played Clarisse Renaldi, Mia Thermopolis’s grandmother and the queen of Genovia, in the first two movies, and thank god for that.

On an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Hathaway said that there is already a script (!) for the third film and that the original Diaries gang is very down: “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.” She added that: “It’s just [that] we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

With the zombified Sex and the City 3 looking like it has been finally laid to rest, we hope the next Princess Diaries leans fully into the fantasy, not only of the fairy-tale story of the original but of the nostalgia of long-awaited (in this case, it will be more than 15 years) sequels finally coming to fruition, à la last year’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. (Maybe Netflix will sign on as a producer if the movie swaps its fictional monarchy for that of Aldovia, the fictional small European realm where its A Christmas Prince franchise takes place. They can have that idea for free.) Will Diaries 3 take into account the current turmoil in the European Union? Will the monarchy of Genovia transition to a republic? Who knows! No word yet on a date, or a title, or whether or not Mandy Moore will be reprising her role, too (here’s hoping!), but stay tuned.
