Kelsey Lu’s been quite busy as of late. The singer-songwriter recently played a show in partnership with Red Bull Music Academy with a full-on orchestra in Los Angeles, she just debuted her own fragrance (which combines florals, vetiver from Haiti, and black spruce from Canada), and she celebrated her birthday just a few days ago by performing in the experimental eco-city Arcosanti in a stunning ombré garment by Australian designer Zhuxuan.

Lu’s most recent onstage look is yet another Zhuxuan creation, although this time it seems that she’s taken inspiration from a surprising source: mollusks. In a series of Instagram posts that put her outfit from last night’s headlining show in Brooklyn on full display, Lu included captions like: “Phylum Mollusca” and “She Opened Her Operculum,” which is a reference to the secreted layer that closes the gap left in a mollusk’s shell when the animal retracts inward. And while Zhuxuan’s intricately ruffled layers are quite otherworldly, they do encase Lu just as a shell would—she could further delve within the piece as easily as a snail can hide within its exterior casing. Turns out Lu can make anything look cool—even a mollusk shell.
