Emma Watson Knows Why the Right Red Lip is a Feminist Force of Nature

For Emma Watson, outspoken feminism is a way of life. The It-Brit hit her stride on the mission for gender equality in 2014, when she joined the United Nations in founding HeForShe, a solidarity campaign that aimed to engage men and boys to take action against the injustices facing women. So it came as no surprise when, earlier this month, Watson took to Twitter to show her support for the actresses who came forth with accusations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, with whom she has worked. Her message was simple and to the point: "I stand with all the women who have been sexually harassed, and am awestruck by their bravery. This mistreatment of women has to stop." And for her first night in London following the remarks? Watson opted for—what else?—a menswear-inspired black coat and a red power lip.

Offset only by a slight flick of crisp noir eyeliner, Watson's bold coral mouth served as a welcome reminder that leaning into one's femininity shouldn't come at a cost. And in the wake of the #MeToo social media campaign and the subsequent conversation surrounding the inherent sexism in Hollywood, what better way to remember that there's nothing more powerful than a woman who uses her voice.
