It has been precisely one year since BTS began its international takeover—at last year’s Billboard Music Awards, where they arrived in black Saint Laurent tuxedos, took home Top Social Artist, and began the meteoric rise that took them to the American Music Awards, the Ellen show, and an exclusive video shoot with Vogue, among many other high-profile events. Tonight, the seven-member K-pop group returned to Las Vegas to attend the show yet again, most notably to perform the single “Fake Love” off their new album, Love Yourself: Tear, for the first time (and, no doubt, take home Top Social Artist once more).
Where the band has previously coordinated their awards show style, they chose to arrive this year in seven distinct outfits by Gucci (a coup for fans—the band has long professed their love for the label, but not yet worn them on the red carpet). V and Jungkook both wore neat navy blue suits with polo shirts layered beneath, rather than conventional button-downs (V added a piece from the Korean punk label 99%IS-: a purple cloth with nae mam daero or “my way” written on it, stuck into his right back pocket), as Jin evinced a classic Gucci dandy in a three-piece printed suit and wide patterned tie. Meanwhile, Suga, RM, Jimin, and J-Hope kept things cool and casual to varying degrees: from Jimin’s jaunty silk ascot and bowling shirt to Suga’s slim logo belt and cuffed jeans; J-Hope’s snake logo tee and cap, all the way to RM’s graphic Hawaiian shirt, white loafers, and sunglasses.
The message came loud and clear—BTS is fully comfortable on U.S. soil now, having come into their own on a global scale. And with a world tour soon to follow, the fun has only just begun.
