How One Vogue Staffer Works Light Summer Layers Into Her WFH Looks

As we continue our social-distancing pledge, the Vogue staff is working from home for the foreseeable future. This article is part of our This Week on Zoom column, where one Vogue editor shares their WFH outfits from the previous workweek—from the waist up, of course.

Because I’ve been sheltering in place in California with my family but working on New York time, my day starts at 6 AM. The meetings that used to feel early in the office are even more so these days. If we’re being honest, preparing for those early Zoom calls involves slapping on some concealer and throwing a cardigan over my pajama shirt, but I have found that committing to some kind of routine helps me stay focused. So I try to at least honor that by eventually putting on pants and washing my face by mid-morning.

Spending an indefinite time not at home (and thus living out of a suitcase) pushed me to be strategic with packing, making me pare down to the items I love and wear most. As a result, I’ve kept my wardrobe pretty relaxed. The days here are hot, but the evenings cool down — plus I spend most of my hours indoors, tethered to my laptop, with the air on. I’ve been relying on a mix of trousers and tees and light layers, with some summer dresses mixed in.

Monday

These tend to be my busiest days with calls and meetings, so I stick to basics. I’m a pants gal to my core, and these Tibi trousers check all my boxes — a high rise, classic stripes, and a light material that’s good for California heat. I wear a sleeveless tee and a cropped cardigan on top, plus my favorite small gold hoops.

Coffee is essential to keeping me going, Mondays and all days — I love this Hario bottle which makes daily cold brew easy while saving me money and a trip to the coffee shop.

Tuesday

Like many of my colleagues, I am a fan of the Dôen dress. I picked up this pale yellow one from their sale a few weeks ago, a rare quarantine purchase. I wear it with a vintage 80s sweater I pilfered from my mom, which originally came with a matching skirt that was sadly lost to the ages. All of my best pieces are from her closet — 1985 to 1995 was truly her era. A mix of gold jewelry from Etsy helps finish the look.

Today I switched briefly into workout clothes, in an attempt to follow an Instagram Live dance cardio workout on the Vogue Beauty account, which our social team organized to raise donations for The Bail Project. But I will spare the internet those photos.

Wednesday

The June gloom is real today, so I wear a cozy sweater over a top from The Line by K and slouchy brown cotton trousers — extreme art teacher energy. Dry shampoo has become my quarantine best friend since no one can tell if your hair is washed on Zoom. It’s a busy day, but luckily the sun emerges in the early afternoon. Since I get to wrap my day at 3ish, I throw on some sandals (and a mask) for a nice long walk, then try to unplug for a bit with a book. I just finished The Glass Hotel, which I loved, and have The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett up next.

Thursday

Most of my team check-ins happen on Thursdays. We’re a pretty close-knit group and get lunch together regularly when we’re in office, so I miss them big time. Video chats don’t quite cut it! Our meetings are pretty casual (50% business, 50% catching up) so I opt for comfort in wide-leg jeans and my hero item, a Hanes white baby tee. I live in these shirts; they have the perfect shrunken fit, are durable, and go with everything. I was lured into buying this garment called a "sweater sleeve" by someone on Instagram — it’s a cozy layer for indoor AC that’s basically one long continuous sleeve. It seems like an odd garment, but I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of it.

At night, I squeeze in a few FaceTimes with my siblings and their kids. We’re scattered now in 5 different cities, and during the pandemic, are checking in much more regularly since we can’t travel for in-person visits. One of my nephews is going through a Frozen phase and another is going through a plastic ball phase, so there’s lots to talk about.

Friday

Fridays don’t pack the punch that they used to, but I’m looking forward to a few days off, mostly since it means sleeping past 6. I tend to gravitate towards more neutral-colored clothing, but I like the idea of celebrating the weekend ahead with something a little brighter. I chose a tomato-red dress, topped off with the oversized white sweater I have been heavily reliant on this summer. After I finish up a few emails, I happily swap my laptop for a cocktail with my fiancé (who by the way has been wearing the same shorts and t-shirt combo literally all week).
