Flashing, metallic eye makeup has been all over the runways of late, as seen at Raf Simons’s first collection for Calvin Klein as well as on the Met Gala red carpet, where the look ranged from graphic eyes on actress Jemima Kirke to a completely silver-painted head, courtesy of Cara Delevingne. The catch to pulling off the high-impact look? “Great, minimal skin,” says newly minted Chanel makeup artist Cyndle Komarovski, who likes to prep the face with a hydrating toner and rich cream for a fresh effect.

Other than your skin routine, she says, “try not to be too serious about makeup.” Which is precisely why Komarovski and her roster of clients, like Kirke and model Lou Schoof, are having fun with pops of shine for spring. “[A metallic eye] is the fastest and loudest addition one can make to her day-to-night look,” says Komarovski. “It’s this season’s statement earring.”

Still, Komarovski preaches a lo-fi approach to the eye-opening look by using her fingertip to apply a wash of bright silver color, like Chanel’s Illusion d’Ombre in Mysterio. Not only is an imperfect look cooler, she says, “the warmth of your finger helps skin to absorb the product better.” And if you’re interested in taking part in the glamour of this season, but want to wade in cautiously, Komarovski suggests starting out with a thin silver liner above the eye or a colored mascara. “Pair it with a gray T-shirt, and remember to forgo under-eye concealer,” she says. “Somehow, it just feels more French that way.”
