Watch Laura Harrier Transform for the BlacKkKlansman Red Carpet and After-Party

Last night at the premiere of Spike Lee's critically-acclaimed film BlacKkKlansman in Los Angeles, all eyes were on Laura Harrier, who stars opposite John David Washington and Adam Driver. Sauntering onto the red carpet in a swingy blush and burgundy Loewe dress, with her supernatural glow and lips painted a deep berry, it was the 28-year-old actress's waist-length box braids, pulled back into a high-slung half-up style, that were most striking of all. As hairstylist Lacy Redway pointed out on Instagram, her look was reminiscent of the woven updos belonging to Janet Jackson in 1993's Poetic Justice and Brandy in hit sitcom Moesha. But for Redway and Harrier, the collaboration went beyond a '90s tribute.

"Braids started in Africa among the Himba tribe in Namibia, who have been braiding their hair for centuries," writes Redway. "Braids were used to symbolize your tribe, material status, wealth, or power. Today we love and wear braids as a protective hairstyle or just because they are beautiful. Tonight [we] celebrate the history and culture of box braids."

With her fitting above-the-neck homage to the film, which vividly hones in on the Black Power Movement in the early '70s (Harrier plays an impassioned college activist named Patrice), here she takes us inside her getting-ready session for the premiere and after-party—swift lip-color change et al.
