Yigal Azrouël offered up his particular brand of edgy minimalism for spring 2022, with a tight edit of 22 looks. Particularly, Azrouël was looking at deconstruction, which is fittingly on-trend as cut-outs have taken over the runways. The first look is a knee-length black dress with a bodice held together by leather trim to create a mishmash of fabric and skin. Though it’s not particularly girly, it is one of the more feminine pieces offered this season. Azrouël put shoulder pads into several of the dresses and tops, juxtaposing their weight with the sensuality of his designs.

Look 2 captures this duality between soft and hard nicely. The wide-leg, slightly billowing trousers look like a menswear staple, while the top is basically a leather bra with one long sleeve (could do without the long sleeve but regardless, it’s an interesting ensemble). Leather is a key fabric for Azrouël and he’s always trying to find new ways to use it, hence the leather trim in the dress and the half-bra. But the most classic interpretations of the fabric were often more compelling: the leather jacket, the trench coat, a pencil skirt. The craze for cut-outs will fade, but the desire for a perfect leather bomber has, so far, proven timeless.
