Solange, Lil Buck, Les Twins, and More Celebrate at SFMOMA’s Epic Birthday Bash

SFMOMA threw itself a one year birthday bash and it was electric. Literally electric: There were neon signs denoting each table at the dinner, which was held in the sculpture garden awash in bright pink for the occasion, and the flashing LED clutch by Lisa Perry and Leo Villareal that Sabrina Buell toted.

But the whole night felt energetically charged. It could have been the small commotion caused by Judy Chicago’s dry ice and flares installation Be No More, which produced so much smoke that someone called the fire department. Or it could have been Lil Buck, who performed between dinner courses, gracefully sliding through a crowd that included Jony Ive, Vanessa Getty, Alexis and Trevor Traina, Katie and Todd Traina, Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt, Charles and Helen Schwab, Doris Fisher (who with her late husband Donald loaned more than 1,000 works from their private collection to the museum), Denise Hale, and Paul Pelosi. It most definitely was the dance duo Les Twins who commanded an upstairs floor where Gagosian Gallery set up a pop-up tattoo parlor—guests could get inked with either a drawing of an avocado by Alex Israel or deer by St. Vincent—and artists including Doug Aitken and Barry McGee mingled among tech founders including Instagram’s Mike Krieger, Airbnb’s Brian Chesky, and Everlane’s Michael Preysman.

There was a throwback Nintendo set up downstairs by the elevators that wasn’t exactly raging but, this being San Francisco, did have some takers. Meanwhile, the Solange performance at the end of the evening undeniably brought the house down. The only question is, how will they top it next year?
