If you’re a Sam Smith fan, then you probably know that he’s been teasing something new over the past few days. Last week, he turned his idyllic English garden into a makeshift runway, strutting among his carefully pruned plants in a very unseasonal faux fur coat (under which he wore little else) and heels, turning to the camera in the last frame to declare: “I have an announcement tomorrow.” It was a dramatic maneuver to reveal his new song “How Do You Sleep?,” which came out today along with a tasteful new video that neatly sums up Smith’s distinct personal style, including everything from those towering platforms that he’ll sometimes wear to his more formal suiting moments.
Starting off the visual in a plain white T-shirt and a simple pair of blue jeans, Smith is then depicted seated in a sheer shirt and slacks, all while surrounded by a troupe of corseted male dancers who gracefully vogue around him. Things turn a bit more theatrical later on—Smith wears a deep green suit atop an industrial-looking cage and then poses for a photoshoot wearing his signature sky-high black heels and a trench coat—but overall, it mostly pulls from the British singer’s more restrained everyday style moments. Smith can sometimes get more playful with his looks—just take when he channeled Liberace last holiday season or when he cosplayed as Gloria Estefan a few months prior—but he’s got all of his tried-and-true basics down pat, too.
