In an Exclusive New Tomb Raider Trailer, Alicia Vikander Gets Vulnerable

As Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft has evolved from a 1990s fantasy gaming figure to Angelina Jolie’s avenging vixen (2001, 2003) to Alicia Vikander’s more nuanced character, its heroine has become less and less afraid to show her vulnerability. In the latest sneak peek of the action reboot—arriving in theaters on March 16—Vikander’s expressions, body language, and circumstances this time around put the human in superhuman. Dressed in post-sexist tank tops and cargo pants, we meet her hurtling through the streets of London as a bicycle messenger—to the strains of Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor”—as she seeks to unravel the mystery of her father’s disappearance.

But fear not, friends. Based on the metrics of two and a half minutes, this will be no mushy family-focused movie: It’s all about the action. Running, swimming, swinging from trees, dangling over chasms, firing her bow and arrow, and jumping into waterfalls, Vikander is a glorious blur of stunts and physicality. She fights, she shoots, she unlocks the codes—a girl’s got to save the world, after all.
