But the hefty price tag belies the frock’s humble origin story: The dress was originally purchased for just $20 back in the early sixties. James Tumblin, who had been in charge of the hair and makeup department of Universal Studios, discovered the discarded dress while researching at the Western Costume Company. “I saw this dress on the floor and a docent told me not to bother to pick it up, because they were throwing it away,” he told the Telegraph.
