Here’s How Selena Gomez Stripped Down for Her “Fetish” Music Video

There are two dresses in Selena Gomez’s new music video “Fetish,” featuring Gucci Mane. One, from Simone Rocha’s Spring 2017 collection, is ruffled and embroidered with delicate little flowers. The other is a simple, pale yellow vintage silk nightgown from the New York store Early Halloween. The only accessories are a pair of dainty Dolce & Gabbana heart earrings and crisp white sneakers. It’s not a lot of fashion, but the visuals are as mesmerizing as any big-budget, designer label–bedecked video, maybe even more so. Stylist Stella Greenspan was responsible for Gomez’s “Fetish” attire, and she worked side by side with director Petra Collins to achieve the horror film–inspired aesthetic.

“We decided that we wanted something that didn’t read too fashion-y,” Greenspan explains. “She needed to look relaxed in the clothes and they needed to highlight her character in the video.” The narrative essentially revolves around a good girl gone bad. “As Selena’s character progresses, so do the clothes—the plain, pale yellow dress is so pretty, and then we see her in the crazier, Simone Rocha dress where she’s wet and you can see her underwear beneath,” Greenspan says. She adds, “I think these looks are very true to Selena’s personal style and it’s not what you would normally think of her wearing in a music video—you strip her of all the fashion and you see the beautiful young woman she is.”

Collins, who drew references from Nobuyoshi Araki photos and Isabelle Adjani’s performance in the film Possession, explains that she, too, wanted Gomez to appear “vulnerable and powerful at once.” “We wanted her to be autonomous, sexy, and in control of her sexuality, and the fashion played a huge role in that.” The photographer and director explains that, “for example, the Simone Rocha dress worked so well because of the way Simone designs her clothing and views femininity—her dresses are obviously so beautiful, but they also hold an ugliness in them. They’re layered, torn, colorful, and full.”
