More than a year after Taissa (Tawny Cypress) put the fear of God into us during her nighttime basement exploits, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) mistakenly dispatched her boyfriend Adam (Peter Gadiot), and Nat (Juliette Lewis) found herself abducted by Lottie’s followers, Yellowjackets is back, with Showtime releasing a first teaser on January 13. Based on the minute-long clip—which features bone antlers, moonlit dances, and carved symbols in the Canadian wilderness—the next installment looks set to home in on the question that’s divided Reddit ever since that grizzly sacrificed itself for the team’s dinner. Did a supernatural force actually have a hand in what the Yellowjackets went through?

Firmly in the “yes” camp is Lottie, who appears to be inducting Nat into her crew at the beginning of the trailer. “Listen to my voice and watch the light,” the now-adult visionary instructs, holding a torch aloft. “Allow yourself to go back, no matter how difficult it gets. What do you see?” Nat’s slightly breathless response? “Darkness—we brought it back with us.”

That darkness, whether paranormal or trauma-induced, is something Taissa is also reckoning with—her wife having discovered that she murdered the family dog shortly after she won her state senate race—while Shauna appears to be trying to put her marriage back together post-affair/murder, not to mention discovering her husband, Jeff (Warren Kole), was blackmailing her fellow survivors. And then there’s Misty Quigley (Christina Ricci), who’s found a possible friend in fellow citizen detective Walter (Elijah Wood). “Kidnapping, cults, death… your friendships are a little more complicated than most,” he (correctly) tells her during what appears to be a stake out in her car.
